Kevin Hickey (age 69)
October 18, 2026

Kevin Thomas Hickey, 69, of Warren, MI, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in the presence of his family, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Kevin was born in Detroit and raised in the Warren and Center Line area, where he attended and graduated from St. Clement Catholic High School with all of his siblings. As a boy, he lined up toy army men for battle and always had a very good reason why he couldn’t cut the grass that week, including the day he swore he’d been at swimming class, though his dry hair and towel told a different story. He was methodical about everything, so much so that every Christmas and birthday he was by far the slowest gift-opener in the family, a running joke for years. As a young man, he had a car decked out in shag carpet, boots that added a few inches, and thick, jet-black hair that no one, under any circumstances, was permitted to touch.

Kevin could work a room. He was a great storyteller who could make anyone laugh. His humor was dry, quick, and goofy all at once, and his wit stayed with him to the very end. He was a doer who couldn’t sit still, always working on something.

He loved his mother’s taco chicken and Spanish rice, a good estate sale, and sports, especially baseball, football, and basketball. He could talk sports for hours with anyone, and most of all with his boys.

Softball was where he brought it all together. Kevin made his games at Liberty Park a true family affair: he played alongside his two brothers, his sisters kept the score and stats, and his parents and sons cheered them on from the sidelines. He was also one of the best players on the team, if not the best, with the speed to fly around the bases and the power to hit with the best of them. He used his favorite sport to bring the family closer, and the games, along with the parties he planned, went on to create memories that will last forever.

However, being a dad was his greatest role. When he was with his kids, the doer went quiet. He slowed down to their pace, let them lead, and added his wit, charm, and insight along the way. He became a father figure to his stepdaughters, Rachelle and Heather, and then a dad to Jeffery, Shaun, and Brett. No dad is perfect, but he gave them everything he had and took great pride in the people they became. His newest joy was his grandson, Lovi, and his family wishes with all their hearts that the two of them had been given more time together. He was a good big brother, too, the kind you could call for advice or just to talk, for hours, about anything at all.

Just as he did when opening presents, Kevin took his time. He fought courageously until his whole family was gathered by his side, and only after they told him it was okay to rest in peace and be with the Lord did he take his last breath.

Kevin will be buried at St. Clement Cemetery beside his parents and his dear son, Jeffery.

Kevin is survived by his sons, Brett (Valerina) and Shaun; his stepdaughters, Rachelle and Heather; his grandson, Lovi; his siblings, Mike (Mary), Bob (Lori), Karen, Laura, and Lisa (Randy); and his aunt, Linda Olsowy.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruth Ann, and his son, Jeffery.
