Gregory Kirchner (age 77)

Born in Poznan, Poland in 1949 Greg is survived by his wife Tamara Sochacka.  He is predeceased by his parents John and Ludwika.  Gregory received his education here in Detroit at Wayne State University where he earned his degree in Physics.  He became the executive assistant to the Library Board in Hamtramck and eventually the Finance Director of the Library.

Gregory Kirchner dedicated decades of his life to serving the Polish American community and the City of Hamtramck. His remarkable legacy of leadership and volunteerism included service with the Polish American Congress, the Polish National Alliance Youth Section, the Polish Scouting Organization, the Czechowski Scholarship Fund, The Black-Polish Conference, the Hamtramck Beautification Commission, the Hamtramck Library Board, and numerous other civic and cultural organizations.  Throughout his life of service, Greg earned numerous recognitions and awards.  This included Piast Institute’s Top 25 Polish American Leaders of 2025.

An entrepreneur, community advocate, and founder of Hamtramck Public TV-19, Gregory was deeply committed to preserving Polish heritage, strengthening community institutions, and improving the lives of those around him. Whether through public service, philanthropy, business leadership, or historical preservation, he made a lasting impact that will be remembered for generations. Despite many opportunities to explore other places, Greg’s profound love for Hamtramck kept him firmly rooted in the community he truly cherished.
