Zofia Lewandowski (age 96)
February 27, 2020
Zofia “Sophie” Lewandowski (nee Bawol), a longtime resident of Hamtramck and Detroit, died Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the age of 96 in Massachusetts. Sophie was born on September 2, 1923 in Hamtramck, Michigan. She was the youngest of six children; Anna, Angeline, Helen, Veronica, and John and the youngest daughter of the family. Sophie married the late Benjamin (Bronislaw) “Benny” Lewandowski in 1944 in Hamtramck, Michigan. They had four children, James Lewandowski (deceased 1989), Michael Lewandowski (deceased 1980), and she is survived by two of her children, MaryAnn (Gary) Jentzen and Robert (Lisa) Lewandowski and her dear daughter-in-law, Joan Desmet. She has 9 grandchildren (Jeffery, Jamie, Michelle, Lisa, Kristen, Courtney, Lauren, Tony and Jason) and 15 great grandchildren. Sophie could always be found with a smile on her face. She was a devoted member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Detroit and St. Florian Catholic Church in Hamtramck and nothing brought her more joy than making pierogi in the church basement with her friend’s for one of the church’s many festivals. She loved spending time with her family and friends, attending mass, going to dances and showing off her latest shoes. She was a meticulous dresser, so much so she was voted Best Dressed Girl in her class at Hamtramck High School in 1941. During World War II, she started working at Chrysler as a press operator and stayed on for 32 years. She was beloved at this job and proud of her time spent there. She was a hard worker and a friend to all. As of last week, she could still be found singing Polish songs with a smile on her face. She was truly loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Prayers and hugs to all of Aunt Zosia’s dear family. Remembering her bustling energy and smile. Up to about the age of 80 aunt Z could still do a great oberek, polka and Russian Cossack!! Aunt Z with her sisters, Helen & Veronica and the many ladies of St. Bart’s Rosary-Altar Society made thousands of pierogies during Lent, Christmas and festivals. The monies made supported the parochial school for many years!! Rest In Peace dear Aunt Z!
Well said, she certainly was outstanding!!i
When Aunty Zosia was born, God threw away the mold! I am so happy she is with her Bennie now. That’s all she ever talked about! Eternal rest grant unto you……
…O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.
Pani Lewandowski, such a Blessing to her extended families at St. Bartholomew and her original home parish of St. Florian. Her love for God, the Church, her family and anything Polish never faltered. Recipes shared will be always be treasured. I know Mrs. Lewandowski loved seeing and being a part of the generations of her children and their children. Mrs. Lewandowski garnered much respect and admiration because of her unwavering morals and values; her endurance of energy was simply amazing!
While I am very sad about aunty’s passing I am happy she is where she really wanted to be. I will always remember the summers we all spent at Camp Dearborn, her generosity, going to the Polish Village for soup, the way she always would take you by the hand and introduce you to everyone and told that person a little about you. But what I am most thankful is that Aunty was part of getting my mom and dad together.
I am sure there was some dancing going on these last couple of nights

Mrs. Lewandowski… You were a great lady! I knew Mrs. Lewandowski when she lived on Sunset Street and was my Grandmother’s neighbor… You took me under your wing when you and your family were going to Poland and I was on the same plane as I was going to the Seminary in Poland… and then great joy when I was first Associate Pastor and then Pastor at St. Florian’s…
The times when we bumped into each other at Mt. Olivet while you were taking care of your family plot and I was taking care of my Great Grandparents plot, next to each other… I will always remember your smile and your kindness. Thank you for all that you had done for me and that one Polka we had at Sweetest Heart of Mary’s Pierogi Festival some years ago… “Dobry Jezu, a nasz Panie daj jej wieczne spoczywanie!” Fr. Darrell
